A few days ago, it was my birthday and I received many birthday wishes from my new friends in Facebook. It was really sweet, heart-warming and totally unexpected since I don’t know most of these friends in real life. So in honor of my new friends, in this post I would like to share some verses and/or quotes about friendship in various religions and by famous public figures.
You see, I am a vagabond, so far I have lived in 8 countries and 28 cities... I have many offline friends all over the world but when I started writing my books which purpose are retracing history, sharing truth, reminding religious tolerance by spreading interfaith knowledge that I have gathered and hoped that would help us learn to respect each other more.... I lost many of my real "friends" and even family members ... I was yelled at, accused of blasphemy and even received death threats. I have spoken in an interfaith religious scholar convention (I am no scholar, btw), I was asked to speak in a global peace conference in Atlanta once but my role was sabotaged due to petty corruption...
So I made a new account in Facebook using my pen name and asked God to send me new friends... friends who are open minded... and He sent me hundreds of new friends and now close to 10,000 followers on my Facebook page! In Facebook my new friends and I share inspiring pictures, serious religious thoughts, spiritual quotes, jokes or just simply non-sense rants every day... and we ponder, think and laugh together every day. They don’t know my real name and real identity but they have become my real friends.
And in this blog, I also have many loyal readers who visit and read my post weekly. I am really grateful for that. As you have noticed, I disabled the comment section in this blog, because I am a little traumatized due to my past experience. Experience has taught me that any discussion that concerns religion somehow always leads to heated argument. However, if you are one of my peaceful readers in this blog who would like to be my friend in Facebook I would be very happy and honored to be yours. Kindly like my Facebook page or add me to your FB friends circle.
Most of the time when we discuss about religion, we talk about the laws, rituals and restrictions. We sometimes forget that human interrelation is just as important as religious rituals, etc. Without friendship we will never achieve peace on earth which is ultimately one of the main purposes of a true religious teaching, don’t you think?
I am fully aware that there are some harsh, unfair and even hateful verses in almost all religious scriptures concerning how to treat others. But that’s a topic for another post. For now, allow me to share some inspiring verses from all the major religions and some well-known people concerning friendship.
Thank you for reading this post and waiting for your friendship request in Facebook!
A VERSE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT (JUDEOCHRISTIAN)
My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend.
(OT: Job 16:20-21 NIV)
A VERSE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT (CHRISTIANITY)
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.

A VERSE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP FROM THE QURAN (ISLAM)
Not equal is the good response and the bad response. You shall resort to the nicest possible response. Thus, the one who used to be your enemy, may become your best friend.
(Quran translation 41:34)
To those who have conquered themselves, the will is a friend. But it is the enemy of those who have not found the Self within them.
(Bhagavad Gita 6:6)
A VERSE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP FROM THE BUDDHA (BUDDHISM)
There is nothing more dreadful than the habit of doubt. Doubt separates people. It is a poison that disintegrates friendships and breaks up pleasant relations. It is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills.
(From “Buddha, Truth and Brotherhood: An Epitome of Many Buddhist Scriptures” by Dwight Goddard)
A QUOTE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP BY EDWARD W. HOWE
Instead of loving your enemies – treat your friends a little better.

The only way to have a friend is to be one.
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)
A QUOTE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP BY GLORIA STEINEM
Any woman who chooses to behave like a full human being should be warned that the armies of the status quo will treat her as something of a dirty joke. That’s their natural and first weapon. She will need her sisterhood.
A QUOTE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP BY BALTASAR GRACIAN
Friendship multiplies the good of life and divides the evil.
A QUOTE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP BY OPRAH WINFREY
Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.
A QUOTE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP BY PLUTARCH
I don't need a friend who changes when I change and who nods when I nod; my shadow does that much better.
A QUOTE ABOUT FRIENDSHIP BY EURIPIDES
Friends show their love in times of trouble.
And last but not least here is my favorite quote paraphrased from a post that has been circling around in Facebook by an anonymous person, especially dedicated to you, my dear fellow TruthSeekers:
Peace, blessings, shalom, salam, namaste!
